CLIENT SPOTLIGHT: Interactive Animation Development

Client: U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO)

Project: How a Wind Turbine Works Animation

Our Support: BCS developed an interactive animation to help non-technical audiences learn how wind turbines operate. Instead of text or a static image, this graphic allows users to learn about individual components of a wind turbine by “taking a look inside” the equipment through visual aids like information bubbles. Built using Adobe Flash, we constructed two views for the image: one that shows how wind can turn blades around the rotor on a wind turbine and another that demonstrates how energy from a wind farm travels to the end user. This animation is prominently displayed on WETO’s website home page, and it consistently ranks as one of WETO’s most popular web pages every year. Given its popularity, our team also created a mobile version of the animation to allow site visitors to have the same experience when on the page, regardless of which device they use.
